After a wait of 15 years â€” plus a 1 1/2-week break since ending its regular season â€” Sweetwaterâ€™s softball team returns to the playoffs when it plays Iowa Park in a Class 3A bi-district matchup at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
The winner of the one-game playoff in Graham will face Burleson Centennial in the area round next week. Sweetwater, which is mak-ing only its third postseas-on appearance in school history and first since 1997, comes in with a 15-11 record and finished third in District 5-3A with a 4-4 record.
The Lady Mustangs hav-enâ€™t played since April 17, but Sweetwater coach Bob-by Williams said his team has been working hard and is ready for Iowa Park.
â€śI think their pitching is probably a lot like what we saw in district,â€ť he said. â€śWe should be able to hit them. They try to play a little small ball, so weâ€™ll have to play good defense.
â€śOur girls are pretty used to (having extra time off). I wish we could have played on Tuesday, but theyâ€™ll be ready to go once they take the field. Itâ€™s been that way for us all year.â€ť
Sweetwater starts only two seniors, shortstop Kinsey Browning and first baseman Alicia Finn. However, the Lady Mustangs have hit a robust .369 as a team and four players â€” outfielder Kelsi Crosson (.453), third baseman Claire Williams (.448), second baseman Suede Shirley (.434) and outfielder Megan Holsey (.422) are hitting over .400. Kelsi Crossonâ€™s twin sister Kendra Crosson â€” who also is a starting outfielder â€” is hitting .397. The teamâ€™s starting pitcher will be Maty Montgomery, who has a 13-9 record this season.
