SW loses 5-3A opener, 11-7
Sweetwater kept the hits coming in its District 5-3A softball-opening game with Big Spring here Friday, getting at least one in all seven innings and 15 in all.But the Lady Mustangs failed to get enough runs to stay with Big Spring. The Lady Steers had just nine hits, but also took advantage of six errors for an 11-7 win at Jerry Collins Complex.Sweetwater (10-6 overall) fell behind 5-0 before com-ing to bat and never caught up, though it did narrow Big Spring’s lead to three runs on four occasions. The last time came in the sixth inning, when Keyli Turner belted a two-run homer that got the Lady Mustangs within 9-6. Suede Shirley had four hits, including two doubles, and Claire Williams three for Sweetwater. Shirley’s second double cut the lead to 11-7 in the seventh, and she also had an RBI double in the first inning. Jerren Villa and Kendra Crosson also had RBI hits for Sweet-water, which had eight starters hit safely — but left 11 baserunners stranded to Big Spring’s two. Maty Montgomery pitched for Sweetwater, which will try to rebound when it hosts Wylie at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.
