Area basketball tournament highlights

Sweetwater’s teams were both first-round losers at the Stanton tournament on Thursday. The boys (4-6) lost to Midland Christian 53-39 while the girls (6-8) lost 56-37 in their opener against Midland Classical.
Kaleb Hoover scored 14 points and Taylor Jones 13 for the boys, who were scheduled to play again at 1:30 p.m. today. The girls, who got 14 points from Alicia Finn and 10 from Kendra Crosson, played Stanton’s JV at 10:30 a.m.
At Highland’s tourna-ment, both the Roscoe and Highland girls won though the Plowgirls also lost. The teams play each other at 6:30 p.m. today.
The other two area teams at Highland’s event both lost first-round games Thursday. Roscoe (0-6) lost its game to Garden City 69-24, and Highland lost 44-42 against Rotan as its record dropped to 1-8.
Sierra Allen scored 17 points and Beth Richburg 14 for Highland’s girls (9-3) as they beat Rotan 51-10. Kara Hughey had five points, Jessica McCain and Lora Stewart four, Kaylee Martin three and Megan Thompson and Madison Moseley two.
The Roscoe girls (6-4) came back to beat Robert Lee, 32-24, on Thursday after losing in their opener to Garden City, 39-34. The latter game was tied 24-24 after three quarters before Garden City pulled away late. Roscoe was paced by Sara Kingston and Lynnsi Moses with 11 points each. Kingston had 12 and Moses 11 against Robert Lee.
Ron Covington had 13 points and Ethan Wilson 12 for Highland’s boys, who outscored Rotan 22-19 in the second half. Shelby Howard had seven points and Brandon Stevens six for the Hornets, and Kevin Box and Kaden Nachlinger both had two. The Roscoe boys got 12 from Jesus Leanos, eight by Keeston Ford, four by Dillon Free-man and two by Brant Bur-nett and Luke Rovig.
