SW playoff berth delayed by Snyder

February 3, 2014

Sweetwater’s Lexi Castillo is tightly guarded by Snyder’s Lyndzi Clemmer in the teams’ District 4-3A game on Friday.

SNYDER — Instead of a three-game winning streak and a playoff spot in District 4-3A, the Sweetwater girls basketball team were unable to build on a promising start at Snyder on Friday. As a result, the playoff hopes will have to wait awhile longer.
Sweetwater, after leading most of the first half, saw a 15-10 advantage turn into a 19-16 halftime deficit and never recovered, as the Lady Tigers came away with a 50-42 win to move into a three-way tie with Sweet-water and Big Spring for third place.
All three teams are now 4-5 heading into Tuesday’s finales. Sweetwater will go to first-place Wylie (9-0) to end the regular season while Snyder travels to 0-9 Monahans and Big Spring entertains Greenwood (6-2), which along with Wylie has clinched a playoff berth.
Sweetwater, Big Spring and Snyder are fighting for the other two playoff spots and who gets in may not be known until a possible two- or three-way tiebreaker is held — if it is deemed neces-sary — later this week.
Despite trailing the entire second half, Sweetwater stayed close enough Friday to make it interesting. The Lady Mustangs went on a 6-2 run to cut Snyder’s lead to six points, 46-40, with 46.1 seconds left on a shot by Abby McPherson.
However, Snyder won it at the line as Sweetwater was forced to foul in an at-tempt to get the ball back. The Lady Tigers hit 4-of-6 in the final 37 seconds to wrap up the victory.
Sweetwater had just one player, Shaneese Brown, score in double figures with 12 points. Taylor McPher-son had eight while Nisha Williams, Hayley Brownlow and Maddie Jones had five,
Cierra Knox three and Abby McPherson and Lexi Castillo two for Sweetwater, which lost both district games to Snyder but has split its two games with Big Spring.
Snyder was led by Lyndzi Clemmer’s 16 points while Kelsi Pierce had 12.
