Sweetwater has qualified for the Class 4A playoffs again in volleyball. It qualified as the No. 3 or No. 4 team from District 5-4A, despite losing on Saturday in three games to first-place Wylie at Wylie’s gym.
After Tuesday’s matches, the Lady Mustangs, who finished 3-5 in district play, will know which team they are tied with — either Snyder or Big Spring, who meet Tuesday in Snyder to decide the remaining berth. The winner will be tied with Sweetwater for third place.
Sweetwater, which lost 13-25, 14-25, 9-25 to Wylie, has a non-district match with Monahans at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Mustang Gym to end the regular season. If the Lady Mustangs finish in a tie with Snyder (2-5), a tiebreaker could be held later this week to decide playoff seeding. But if Big Spring (2-5) finishes tied with Sweetwater, the Lady Mustangs will be the No. 3 seed because they beat Big Spring in the teams’ two district matches.
Wylie (7-0) and Brownwood (4-3) will be the top two seeds. Brownwood clinched a playoff spot on Friday by beating Snyder, a win that assured Sweetwater of a playoff spot as well.
Riley Dodd, Jessica Poe and Charity Thompson all had three kills for Sweetwater at Wylie to lead the Lady Mustangs. Also, Elli Lehnert had 15 assists, six digs and one block; Hannah Mobley had five digs, three blocks and one ace; and Sonora Medellin had eight digs.
