SW plays Merkel closer, but still loses first-round games

Two days after suffering lopsided defeats at Merkel, Sweetwater’s boys and girls basketball teams got first-round rematches Thursday at the Stanton tournament and this time, both of the games were much closer.
But Merkel still won the boys game, 45-43, in overtime and also defeated the Sweetwater girls 35-30.The Mustangs (4-5) were to play either Tahoka or Midland Classical at 3 p.m. today, while the Lady Mustangs (6-8) faced Midland Chris-tian this morning in their consolation semifinal.
Paxton Kelley scored 16 points and Dylon Adames 14 for the Mustangs against Merkel, which scored the only two points in overtime to break a 43-all tie at the end of regulation. Sweetwa-ter forced the extra period by outscoring Merkel 10-6 in the fourth quarter.
The Sweetwater girls, meanwhile, outscored Mer-kel 15-12 in the second half of their first-round rematch but couldn’t overcome a 23-15 deficit at halftime.
Alicia Finn led Sweetwater with 12 points and Taylor McKoy had seven.
Callie Sandusky scored 17 points and Sierra Allen 10 to lead Highland’s girls (5-6) to a 56-29 win over Rotan in Thursday’s first round game at the Highland tournament and Highland’s boys (1-8) got their first win Thursday by defeating Rotan, 37-17, as Landon Rowlett had 12 points. At the same tourna-ment, Roscoe’s girls lost to Sands 26-25 and Roscoe’s boys lost to Sands 54-31.
