SW rallies in 7th to stun Wylie 8-6 for 1st district win
Sweetwater’s 8-6 win over Wylie on Tuesday has dramatically changed the team’s outlook through the first two games of the 2012 District 5-3A softball season. And the Lady Mustangs’ victory could not have been more dramatic.Sweetwater (11-6 overall) came to bat in the seventh inning facing a 6-2 deficit after Wylie’s Makenley Lunsford belted her second home run of the game — and second in two innings — in the top of the seventh. But coach Bobby Williams’ team rose to the challenge by scoring six runs to wipe out that four-run deficit as Sweetwater improved to 1-1 in district while Wylie (0-1, 8-5) is still looking for its first district victory. All nine starters in Sweet-water’s lineup came to bat against Wylie in the seventh and all but three scored. The last five runs came after Wylie had gotten two outs. The teams were tied 6-6 when the Lady Mustangs’ No. 9 hitter, Angela Garza, singled with runners at second and third base to score both Jackie Carey, who doubled, and Alicia Finn, who had an infield single. After a leadoff double by Kinsey Browning, the next two hitters were retired. But Browning scored on Keyli Turner’s flyball out to make it 6-3, and Claire Williams homered to narrow Wylie’s advantage to 6-4. After a single by Kendra Crosson, Kelsi Crosson tied it for the Lady Mustangs by stroking a two-run homer over the centerfield fence. Carey then doubled and Finn also reached to set the stage for Garza’s dramatic, game-winning hit.The game was scoreless for the first 3 1/2 innings as both teams missed out on good chances to break the deadlock. But Sweetwater went ahead 1-0 in the fourth when Kelsi Crosson singled and came home on a passed ball. Wylie tied it in the fifth, but Sweetwater made it 2-1 when Suede Shirley singled and scored on Kendra Crosson’s RBI single in the bottom of the inning.Maty Montgomery scat-tered 10 hits to get a complete-game victory, despite Lunsford’s two homers. Williams, Browning, Garza and both of the Crosson twins finished with two hits, and Kelsi Crosson also scored twice.Sweetwater gets an open date Friday, then travels to Brownwood next week.
