Sweetwater varsity girls hoops coverage

The Sweetwater girls basketball team got its season back on track Tuesday, and also finally picked up a win at home as the Lady Mustangs crushed Abernathy 45-26.
Abernathy led 14-13 at the end of the first quarter when one of its players hit a buzzer-beating 3-pointer just past the midcourt line. But Sweetwater (4-2) — which had lost to Abilene High (42-48) and Early (35-54) at Mustang Gym following a 3-0 start — dominated the last three quarters.
Taylor McPherson scored in the first minute of the second period, and Hayley Brownlow and Kendra Cros-son also scored to complete a 7-0 run that put Sweet-water ahead to stay. The Lady Mustangs led 24-18 at halftime, then outscored Abernathy 12-2 in the third quarter for a 36-20 advan-tage. All 12 points came on 3-pointers — two by Suede Shirley and one each by Janell Walker and Kelsi Crosson.
Shirley finished with a team-high 11 points, while Walker had nine and Kendra Crosson eight. Shelby Cas-on (six), McPherson (four), Brownlow (three), Kelsi Crosson (three) and Elise Lawrence (one) also scored, while the defense allowed its fewest points in a game this year. Walker had three treys, Shirley two and Kelsi Crosson and Browning one.
“When our outside game is going, we’re pretty good,” said coach Al Miller. “We needed this after the way we played against Early.”
The defense held Abernat-hy to just 12 points over the last three quarters and none over the final five minutes. McPherson, a reserve, and Cason each had eight rebounds to share team honors while Shirley, Kelsi Crosson and Kendra Crosson had five rebounds. Kelsi Crosson also had four steals and Walker three for the Lady Mustangs, who will now play six games over a three-day period when they compete in a tournament in Ballinger starting Thursday. Sweetwater won’t play at home again until it hosts Brownwood on Dec. 11.
