SW, Snyder vie for 4-3A berth today in Snyder

April 22, 2014

Despite winning 68 per-cent of its games this sea-son, the Sweetwater base-ball team needs at least one more victory to assure itself of a trip to the playoffs.
A win at Snyder in today’s 7 p.m. regular season finale guarantees the Mustangs — 4-5 in District 4-3A, 17-8 overall — no worse than a third-place tie with Monahans, which like Snyder is also currently at 4-5. Monahans will host Greenwood (1-8) today.
Wylie (8-1) and Big Spring (6-3) are guaranteed playoff berths. Sweetwater, Snyder and Monahans are fighting for the other two spots.
In the event that Sweet-water and Monahans win today, they would both make the playoffs. Sweetwater can also make the playoffs even if it loses to Snyder today, if Monahans also falls to Greenwood. Sweetwater and Monahans would then have a play-in game to de-cide the No. 4 berth, while Snyder would qualify as the No. 3 team. But if Sweet-water loses today and Mon-ahans also wins, Sweetwa-ter would be eliminated.
Sweetwater lost to Snyder 7-4 at Sweetwater on April 4, but won 3-2 the last time it went to Snyder in 2013. Another win could elimin-ate the Tigers, who were 4-1 after their win over the Mustangs but have lost four straight since then. Sweetwater led Monahans by a game and was tied with Snyder for third place until Monahans beat Big Spring 3-2 and Sweetwater lost to Wylie 1-0 on Friday. Big Spring’s loss ended its hopes of winning the district title, while Wylie’s victory clinched the No. 1 berth.
Three days after a rousing 15-1 win over Monahans, the Mustangs had just two hits against Wylie pitcher Blake Frampton and were shut out for the first time this season. Snyder lost to Greenwood, 4-3, to fall into a three-way tie for third place as the Rangers earned their first win in 4-3A play.
