Points were at a premium in Thursdayâ€™s action when Sweetwaterâ€™s sub-varsity football teams traveled to Snyder. Both sub-varsities came away with close losses in a pair of defensive struggles while kicking off district play.
Sweetwaterâ€™s junior varsity Mustangs lost 6-0 in their contest, while the freshmen fell by a score of 8-6. The nar-row defeats dropped both teamsâ€™ records to 4-2 and they will stay on the road to face Greenwood this Thursday.
The junior varsity Mustangsâ€™ excellent defensive effort was led by Austin Marlett, who finished with seven tackles in the game including three for a loss. The offense was led by quarterback Hayden Reeves, who was 9-of-19 passing for 97 yards; and Kris Duran, who caught three passes for 53 yards.
In the freshman game, both teams scored one touchdown with the difference a two-point conversion by Snyder after its score in the first quarter. Sweetwater scored on a 2-yard run by Denzell Moore in the second quarter. Max Gomez, Adrian Vizzerra, Austin Kamer, Dâ€™Jaman West, Michael Lawrence and Dylan Jimenez were also offensive standouts. Defensive standouts were Cory Mendez (recovered fumble), Lawrence, Vizzerra, Daniel Maldonado, Jâ€™Corey Amos, Isaiah Gonzales and Branson Guelker.
