SW takes 2nd at B-Spring

After reaching the title game of the Silver Bracket at Big Spring’s Crossroads tournament, Sweetwater’s softball lost to Lamesa 6-5 in five innings on Saturday for a second-place finish.
The offense was led by Abby Garcia, who had two hits including a home run and scored twice; and Kat Montoya, who hit a two-run double. Morgan Gomez also doubled and Savanna Hall, Lauren Jones and Shaneese Brown also hit safely for the Lady Mustangs, who out-hit Lamesa 7-5 but saw their record fall to 8-6. Annaliese Espinoza and Hall pitched for Sweetwater.
Sweetwater opened the tournament on Thursday by winning pool games against Levelland, Midland High JV and Reagan County.
However, the Lady Mus-tangs then lost to Levelland 16-6 and Forsan 12-4 at the tournament to start bracket play on Friday.
Sweetwater’s luck, how-ever, improved with wins Saturday against the Odessa Permian JV (12-7) and then Coahoma (13-7) to reach the title game against Lamesa. where the team jumped out to an early 2-0 lead.
Gomez and Garcia both had three hits to pace the team’s 11-hit attack vs. the Permian JV. Gomez had four RBI, including a triple and double, and Garcia had two RBI including a double. Montoya and Cierra Knox also collected doubles for the Lady Mustangs. Espino-za had two RBI and Mon-toya one. Espinoza was also the winning pitcher, allow-ing just three hits.
Sweetwater’s offense was even more productive in its second game Saturday vs. Coahoma, as the team had a total of 15 hits.
The Lady Mustangs got off to a quick start, scoring seven of their runs in the first three innings after falling behind 2-0 in the bottom of the first.
The team’s hitting attack was again led by Garcia, who was 3-for-3 with two triples, four runs scored and an RBI; and Megan Holsey, who was 3-for-4 with a double and one RBI.
Cierra Knox also had two triples and Lauren Jones also tripled, while driving in three runs. Gomez had a double and two RBI and Espinoza had a double and one RBI. Hall had a single and RBI and Rebecca Gon-zales had two singles and one RBI. Gonzales, Knox and Brown scored twice.
Hall scattered seven hits and was the winning pitch-er for Sweetwater.
Maddie Berry and Holsey each had two hits and Espi-noza, Gomez and Holsey had RBI against Levelland on Friday. Hall pitched the first five innings and Espin-oza finished up.
Against Forsan, Gonzales had two hits with a double to pace the offense, while Berry pitched.
