Sweetwater’s 11-4 victory over Wylie on Tuesday in the second — and final — 10-11 year-old District 5 Little League All-Star championship game at Sweetwater’s Major League Field represented a true “team” effort.
Nine of the 12 players had hits, and the three who didn’t not only reached base but also scored a run.
Sweetwater was forced to face Wylie three times in the tournament after losing 8-6 in last Friday’s semifinal. But the team rebounded to reach the championship game through the losers bracket after an 8-5 win over Snyder on Saturday, then beat Wylie 7-5 Monday to force a second title game.
They now advance to the Texas West Section II tournament July 13-17 at Waco. The same players went to a sectional tournament in Fort Worth last summer as 9- and 10-year-olds.
On Tuesday, Sweetwater all but settled the outcome by jumping to a 9-0 lead after the first three innings, collecting 10 hits in that time — six of them during a six-run second inning that was highlighted by Jordan McGee’s three-run homer, Noah Martinez’s two-run triple and Kobe Clark’s RBI single. Sweetwater came back to score three runs in the third inning for a 9-0 lead over Wylie before the visiting team rallied slightly by scoring three runs in the top of the fourth and one in the fifth to cut it to 9-4. But Sweetwater added two more tallies in its last at bat to bring home the win and become the second local team going to sectionals. A Senior League (ages 15-16) team is playing in a Texas West Section II tournament that will be held July 13-16 in Garland.
Both McGee and Kiante McCoy had two hits to pace Sweetwater on Tuesday, with McGee scoring three runs and Clark two.
