SW teams face key matchups today

October 11, 2013

One of the biggest high school rivalries in West Texas — Sweetwater vs. Snyder — takes place today in Snyder on two fronts.
While the Sweetwater-Snyder football matchup at 7:30 p.m. is sure to get more attention, in part because it is the District 4-3A opener for both teams, the volleyball match involving the two schools — which tips off at 5 p.m. — is just as critical.
In both cases, the winner will get an early leg up on one of the four playoff spots in the district — up from three in the past — while the loser will have to work a bit harder in order to get into the postseason.
The Sweetwater football team has a slightly better overall record (2-3) so far than does Snyder (1-4).
But the Tigers won their most recent game after a four-game losing streak to begin the year —by a total of nine points. Sweetwater, on the other hand, has lost its last two games after back-to-back wins over Andrews and Breckenridge.
The Sweetwater and Snyder volleyball teams are tied for fourth place at 1-3 with six matches left, and this will be their first match against each other. Snyder will come to Sweetwater for the district finale Oct. 29 — a match that could possibly decide a playoff spot. Wylie is in first place with a 4-0 record while Monahans and Big Spring are 3-1 and tied for second place. Green-wood is currently in last place with an 0-4 mark.
Sweetwater’s football and volleyball teams are trying to end playoff droughts that stretch back to the 2008 season. The volleyball team lost to Big Spring 25-6, 25-23, 25-16 on Tuesday after getting its first district win over Greenwood four days earlier.
Snyder’s only district win also came over Greenwood back on Oct. 1 and was its first win in district play since the 2010 season — when it beat Sweetwater.
Incidentally, this will be the 64th meeting time that Snyder and Sweetwater have met in football. Sweet-water holds a 37-25-1 edge.
