The long trip to Monahans didn’t have a happy ending for Sweetwater’s teams on the diamond Tuesday. They will both play host to Wylie when District 4-3A action resumes this Friday.
Monahans 7, Sweetwater 3
Sweetwater (15-4, 2-1) dropped out of a tie for first as Monahans led 5-0 after one inning and held on to hand the Mustangs — who had won 12 straight — their first loss since Feb. 22.
Sweetwater is now tied with Snyder for second with Wylie (3-0) atop 4-3A.
Monahans (1-2) jumped all over starting pitcher Ste-phen May in the first inning, using four hits and three errors to lead 5-0 and also scoring runs in the third and the sixth. Sweetwater, which was out-hit by Monahans 8-6, matched its lowest run total of the season.
Luis Carrasco did it all for Monahans, hurling a complete-game win and going 4-for-4 with two RBI at the plate. His RBI single in the third made it 6-0 after May was replaced by James Clift on the mound. Sweetwater finally scored when J.P. Poe reached on an error and came home on Tyler Beas-ley’s RBI double in the fifth inning.
But Monahans got the run back when Carrasco hit a one-out single in the sixth and scored on an outfield error with two outs.
Sweetwater scored twice in the seventh inning. Poe singled and scored on a double by Hayden Reeves, and Isaiah McGee singled to score Reeves. But Carrasco ended the rally by getting a flyball for the final out.
Greg Aiken also doubled for Sweetwater with one out in the sixth, only to be stranded. Clift pitched well in relief, giving up two hits, no earned runs and fanning six with no walks in four innings of work.
Monahans 7, Sweetwater 4
Sweetwater (9-10, 0-4) took a 3-0 lead in the first, getting on the board on Abby Garcia’s two-run single and an RBI single by Naomi Gonzales. However, the lead vanished when Monahans (2-2), after two runs in the third, pushed across four runs in the fourth for a 6-3 lead and the Lady Loboes held on for the win.
Cierra Knox had two hits for Sweetwater and Maddie Berry (double) and Lauren Jones had the other hits.
Berry gave up nine hits, four earned runs and struck out four with two walks in going the distance. Bailey had three of the hits for Monahans and scored three runs. Knox, Garcia, Morgan Gomez and Shaneese Brown all scored for Sweetwater.
