Sweetwater swept its first boys-girls basketball doubleheader of the season on Tuesday, as both squads won their games at Early.
The boys rallied for a 58-50 win in their opener. The girls also won, 52-48, in a game that saw Sweetwater shoot an amazing 52 free throws â€” though the Lady Mustangs made just 23.
Sweetwater girls 52, Early girls 48
Taylor McPherson, who by herself attempted 24 free throws, scored 19 points to pace Sweetwater (2-2).
Bianca Castillo had eight points, Hayley Brownlow seven, Kayla Chowning and Abby McPherson six, Shaneese Brown four and Maddie Jones two. Sweet-water held on after leading Early 36-24 at intermission, only to be held to just 16 points over the final two periods.
The visiting Lady Mus-tangs took a 17-13 lead after one period, then built a 12-point lead at halftime before being held to three points in the third quarter.
Sweetwaterâ€™s edge at the free throw line proved to be the difference. The Lady Mustangs shot over twice as many free throws as Early, which attempted 24 and made 15. However, the Lady Longhorns hit seven 3s to just one for Sweetwater.
â€śWe played well,â€ť said coach Al Miller, â€śbut we need to work on taking better care of the ball and not foul so much.
â€ś(The game officials) called everything. We just fouled less the second half,â€ť added Miller.
Sweetwater boys 58, Early boys 50
Kaleb Hoover scored 23 points and Deâ€™andre Gatson 16 for Sweetwater, which trailed 41-35 after three periods before winning with a 23-9 surge at the end. Early led by as much as 13 points and was up 29-19 at halftime. Also scoring points for the Mustangs were Jacob Peyton with eight, Dylan Bennett with six, Rhett Torres with four and J.P. Poe with one. Early led 12-9 after one quarter.
Sweetwaterâ€™s sub-varsity boys teams also won their games Tuesday. The JV Mustangs pulled out a nar-row 35-33 win over Early, while the freshman boys won 40-21 in their contest.
Michael Lawrence had 16 points to pace Sweetwaterâ€™s JV. Hardy Escobar had eight, Max Gomez four, Jordan Jones three and Gage Hannah and Mathew Trevino two. Michael Green (17) and Jacoby Hunt (11) combined for 28 points in the freshman boys game to pace the win. Also scoring were Hunter Mobley (eight points) and Javier Olguin (two).
The varsity and JV boys teams go to Stanton Friday, but the freshmen are off until next week. The varsity girls and JV girls also go to Stanton on Friday.
Also, the JV and freshmen girls will begin play at a tournament in Jim Ned that begins Thursday.
The boys will host Wall next Tuesday in what is the home opener for all three Sweetwater teams.
