SW teams visit Snyder

January 25, 2011

The Sweetwater High School junior varsity girls basketball team has an outstanding 21-2 overall record and is 3-1 in district play this season. The team plays at Snyder at 4:30 p.m. today. While it’s true that neither Sweetwater or Snyder has had much success on the basketball court so far in District 5-3A., it’s nearly always interesting when the two schools face each other.
Fans will get a double dose of the rivalry today, as Sweetwater visits Snyder in a 5-3A varsity twinbill that starts with the girls game at 6 p.m. The boys contest is scheduled to tip off at about 7:30 p.m.
Sweetwater and Snyder are both 1-3 in girls play with just four games left. But the winner of today’s game will take a big step toward gaining the third and final district playoff berth. Snyder won the teams’ first district meeting, 46-43, in Sweetwater on Jan. 11. Big Spring, which is also 1-3, plays a non-district game today at Monahans.
Sweetwater ended the first half of district play Friday with a 46-39 loss to No. 21-ranked Brownwood, while Snyder fell to previously-winless Big Spring 59-53, creating a three-way tie for third place. Brown-wood (3-1) goes to Wylie (4-0) tonight for a first-place district showdown in today’s other matchup.
The boys game matches teams looking for their first district win, as Sweetwater is 0-3 while Snyder is off to an 0-2 start. Sweetwater is coming off a 72-45 loss on Friday to Brownwood (1-1), while Snyder was defeated 85-49 by Big Spring (3-0), which leads Wylie (2-0) by a half-game in district but has an open date tonight.
In area games, the Roscoe boys (2-2) and girls (1-4) host Munday in District 9-A, Division I; the Highland girls (6-2) and boys (2-4) travel to Ira in District 11-A, Division II; and the Blackwell girls (2-7) and boys (2-5) go to Robert Lee in District 12-A, Division II.
All six teams hope to get back on the winning track today after losing on Friday. Highland’s girls are still in good shape for a playoff berth in District 11-A, Division II as they are in second place by a half-game over Loraine (5-2) and a full game over Ira (5-3) with four games to play, and a win tonight will greatly enhance their chances.
In District 9-A, Division I, the winner of the Roscoe-Munday boys game gets a leg up on a playoff spot. Both teams are 2-2 in district play.
Blackwell’s girls lost to Bronte 58-28 on Tuesday while the boys fell 57-24. Reccie Roland had 15 points, Jennifer Allen and Jessica Morrow five and Amanda Bullard three for the girls. For the boys, Caleb Mag-ness had eight points, Caleb Jeter six, Mark Monroe four and Brandon Elliott and Jayden Jones two.
