A win today at Snyder will clinch a playoff berth for the Sweetwater girls basketball team, which has won its last two contests to move into third place in District 4-3A with a 4-4 record. The Lady Mustangs lead Snyder and Big Spring, both 3-5, by a game with two to play.
The Sweetwater boys, who trail third-place Big Spring and Greenwood by two games in District 4-3A, take a 1-5 record into their game today at Snyder (0-6). Another defeat would all but eliminate the Mustangs from playoff consideration, but of their last four games, only Tuesday’s game at Wylie (6-0) is against a team above .500 in district.
Sweetwater beat Snyder, 45-40, on Jan. 14, for its only win in district play and played Big Spring and Greenwood, its last two op-ponents, close the first time before losing.
A loss today wouldn’t be fatal for the Lady Mustangs, who finish at Wylie (8-0) on Tuesday. A three-way tie for third would then result if Big Spring also beats Monahans (0-8). But Snyder, by virtue of beating Sweetwater in both district meetings, would have the tiebreaker. Sweetwater and Big Spring have split their two games, with each winning at home. Sweetwater lost to Snyder, 59-36, when the teams met in Sweetwater on Jan. 14. Snyder was 0-3 before that game, but has won three of five since then.
Sweetwater defeated Big Spring 44-40 in its district opener, but lost the rematch 54-21 on Jan. 21. A play-in game would be necessary if Sweetwater and Big Spring, which plays Greenwood on Tuesday, finish district with the same record.
Greenwood (6-2) is already assured of a playoff spot, while Wylie can clinch the No. 1 seed by beating the Rangerettes today.
Last year, Sweetwater and Big Spring finished in a tie for third place in 4-3A and had a tiebreaker game for the final playoff spot, which Sweetwater won 44-43.
