Sweetwater High School’s football and volleyball teams are heading to Snyder today for what could be consider-ed their last “doubleheader” of the 2011 season, and the rivalry between the schools won’t be the only thing on both teams’ minds.
The SHS football team, which is 1-1 in district play after a 28-6 win last week over Big Spring, must win one of its last two games to have a playoff shot. Snyder (1-0) is tied with Wylie for first place and leads both Sweetwater and Brownwood by a half-game.
The SHS volleyball team, which is 2-4 in district play, must win its last two matches to force a tie for the final playoff spot with either Big Spring (4-2) or Brownwood (4-3), who play each other a week from today. Snyder (0-7) is last in the district.
After facing Snyder, the Mustang football team ends the season Oct. 28 when it returns home for a game with major playoff implications against Brownwood.
Roscoe (0-2, 0-7) hosts Crosbyton (2-0, 4-3) in District 7-A, and Highland (2-5) hosts Ira (7-0) in its district opener. Blackwell’s home game with Novice, also its district opener, was cancelled and Blackwell (1-0, 1-7) gets a forfeit win, its first win of the season.
The Breast Cancer Fight for the Cure event will take place at the Sweetwater-Snyder volleyball match at 5 p.m. and the football game at 7:30. Businesses or individuals providing sponsorships will have their names displayed on the back of T-shirts that were designed for today’s events.
