SNYDER — The expected softball showdown Friday between District 4-3A’s top two teams turned into a one-sided affair instead.
And unfortunately for Sweetwater, it was the host Lady Tigers who dominated as they won, 10-0, to take the outright district lead.
Snyder is now 5-1, while Sweetwater falls to 4-2.
The Lady Mustangs had defeated Snyder 11-8 in the District 4-3A opener March 15 in Sweetwater, helped largely by a 10-run inning.
But in the rematch, they were shut out for the first time all year on just one hit, a fourth-inning single by Kelsi Crosson off Snyder’s Adrianna Hernandez.
Megan Holsey, who led off the inning with a walk, was the only other player for Sweetwater to reach base in the shortened contest, which was called after five innings because of the 10-run mercy rule.
Sweetwater’s troubles be-gan in the first inning when Snyder scored three runs on four hits, all singles, to take a 3-0 lead off Sweetwater pitcher Maty Montgomery.
Snyder then used an error, passed ball, walk and two singles to make it a 5-0 game in the third inning.
It became 8-0 in the fourth inning after a pair of infield singles and a throw-ing error on the next hitter that allowed three runs to cross the plate. A fifth-inning single scored the final run after Snyder made it 9-0 on a pair of singles, a wild pitch and throwing error. Montgomery allowed 11 hits, but five of Snyder’s runs were unearned.
Sweetwater will try to get back on track Tuesday as the Lady Mustangs travel to Greenwood (3-3), which has lost three straight.
Big Spring (4-2) will visit Sweetwater in another key district game on Friday.
