BROWNWOOD – The Brownwood Lions clinched at least a share of their third straight district baseball championship with Friday’s 13-6 victory over the Sweewater Mustangs at Morris Southall Field.
The Lions (18-6, 6-0) led 2-1 heading into the third inning, where they erupted for seven runs — including three on a home run by shortstop Levi Perez – off Sweetwater starting pitching Larry Daniel.
Brownwood’s advantage peaked at 11-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning, but Sweetwater (11-15, 1-5) responded with four runs in the top of the fifth to close the gap to 11-6.
Tanner Crain recorded a two-RBI single, Sterling Reeves chipped in an RBI ground out and Cameron Fox followed with an RBI infield single.
Sweetwater grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning as the first three Mustangs reached base — Ryan Linebaugh and Sean Morrow on singles and Greg Aiken on an error. Brownwood winning pitcher James Crow answered by retiring Connor Stafford and Crain, but Linebaugh scored on a wild pitch before Cameron Fox was retired for the final out.
The Mustangs finished with eight base hits, led by Marrow with two. Crain, Aiken, Linebaugh, Fox, Austin Burt and Sterling Reeves tallied one hit apiece. Crain’s two RBI were a team high, while Fox and Reeves drove in a run each.
Daniel allowed nine runs on eight hits over 2.2 innings, while Gabe Medellin tossed the final 4.1 innings and allowed four runs on four hits.
Brownwood 10, Lady Mustangs 0
Sophomore Sydney Laws tossed a five-inning no-hitter as the District 5-3A softball champion Brownwood Lady Lions blanked the Sweetwater Lady Mustangs, 10-0, Friday night.
Laws, who pitched a perfect against against Sweetwater in Brownwood a year ago, struck out eight and allowed only three base runners — all on Brownwood (22-4, 7-0) errors over the first two innings.
The only Lady Mustangs (10-13, 2-5) to reach base were Alicia Finn and Kendra Crosson on consecutive two-out errors in the first inning, while Kinsey Browning started the second by reaching on a Brownwood miscue.
Finn pitched all five innings for Sweetwater, surrendering 10 runs on 12 hits.
Sydnie Darden and Kate Atchley led the Lady Lions with three hits apiece, while Mallorie Maxwell recorded a team-high three RBI.
