After storming past their first two opponents, the Sweetwater 10-11 year-old all-stars looked to be on their way to another convincing win on Friday when they led 4-1 after the first 1 1/2 innings against Wylie. But one dramatic hit — a grand slam homer by Wylie’s Conner Carlton — changed all that as the visitors rallied to defeat Sweetwater, 8-6, in their District 5 semifinal at Sweetwater’s Major League field that sent Wylie to Monday’s title game.
Sweetwater, meanwhile, got a rematch against Snyder — its first tourna-ment victim — on Saturday in the losers bracket final. Snyder beat Clyde, 13-6, in Friday’s other semifinal. Sweetwater needed a win to face Wylie for the championship, while another loss meant elimination. Monday’s winner advances to sectional play.
Carlton’s blast comple-ted a five-run Wylie rally in the second inning.
Sweetwater scored twice in the first and second in-nings. Kiante McCoy and Mason Maxwell had RBI hits in the first inning, and another two runs scored when a fly ball hit by Jordan McGee was dropped for an error. But Carlton came up with the bases loaded in the bottom of the second and put Wylie ahead 6-4 with his home run. Carlton also had an RBI single and a double in the game.
Sweetwater trailed 8-4 until scoring twice in the fifth inning on a bases-loaded grounder by Chris Thompson and Taylor Turney’s RBI single.
Sweetwater threatened again in the sixth when Ky Hoover singled with two outs, but Carlton struck out Sweetwater’s next hitter to end the game.
