Sweetwater garners two top honors
At the Sweetwater City Commission meeting on Tuesday morning, October 9 at City Hall, City Manager Eddie Brown announced that Sweetwater was recently given two honors for outstanding achievements. As part of his monthly report, Brown stated that the City of Sweetwater has once again received the GFOA (Government Finance Officers Association) Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for the fiscal year ending in 2011.Brown praised the city's finance department, led by Carolyn Lawrence, for attaining the award for the 28th year. He also noted that the award is the highest given by the group, which is a great accomplishment for a city of Sweetwater's size. The city also earned another honor, the Texas Comptroller Leadership Circle Gold Medal award. The achievement was earned for meeting a high level of local government transparency on the city's website. Also included in the report was that the local SNAP (Senior Nutrition Activities Program) recently received a $5,000 donation from the Nolan County Foundation. This amount will be matched with city funds.Furthermore, the Texas Municipal League Region 6 Fall Meeting--in which Sweetwater Mayor Greg Wortham currently serves as president of the group--will be held in Anson on Thursday, October 25, 2012. Anyone planning to attend the event must RSVP to Kelli Ferguson no later than Friday, October 19.A variety of action items were also presented during the meeting. The resolution authorizing the submission of an application to the Texas Department of Agriculture to the Texas Community Development Block Grant Program for 2013-2014 funding was approved. Sweetwater has obtained this grant before, which was used for the recent project on the sewer line on Neff Street. The total amount of $275,000, if received, would be used for waterlines on West Third Street, all the way up through West Sixth. The approval now allows for the city to begin the paperwork process. Also approved was the assignment of the Lake Sweetwater Bait Shop lease from Vivian Williams to Greg Morgan. While the contract points out that the contract is non-transferrable, a change can be made at the city's discretion, which was executed in this instance. In addition, approval was given for easement dedications, which include water and sewer improvements, via a plat of 14.51 acres, which will be designated as Lot 1, Block 1 for the Love's Truck Stop addition to the city. The Quarterly Investment Report--for the quarter ending on September 30, 2012--was approved as well, following the reading of the report by Carolyn Lawrence. Approval was also given to the minutes for the meeting on September 11, 2012.
