The Sweetwater girls took third at Wylieâ€™s event while the Sweetwater boys sent two teams to Snyderâ€™s tour-nament and placed fifth and third, respectively, in sea-son-opening high school golf action.
The Sweetwater girls shot 388 at Wylie for a close third-place finish. The Lady Mustangs trailed first-place Brownwood (384) by just four strokes and second-place Cooper (385) by just three shots, while nudging out Graham (389) for the No. 3 spot.
Sweetwaterâ€™s Alex Gomez was third among medalists with a 91. She actually tied Cooperâ€™s Ilyanna Benavidez for third, but won a scorecard playoff. Jodie May car-ded a 93 to finish in a tie for sixth among medalists. The other Sweetwater scores came from Katie High with a 96, Leila Rubio with a 108 and Sarah Witt with a 112.
Grahamâ€™s Ashley Snyder won the medalist title with an 88 and Haley Hargrove of Jim Ned placed second with a 90.
Sweetwater plays again at its annual invitational event to be held Feb. 25-26 at the Sweetwater Country Club.
The Sweetwater boys di-vided into No. 1 and No. 2 teams for Snyderâ€™s tourna-ment and played in separate divisions. The No. 1 team played at Western Texas College Golf Course, and placed fifth among its Division I competition with a 361 total this past Saturday.
Finishing ahead of Sweetwater in Division I were first-place Wolfforth Frenship (304), second-place Snyder (334), third-place Levelland (335) and fourth-place Wylie (341).
Sweetwaterâ€™s Ryan Mer-cer was sixth among medalists with a 79. Also on the team were Mason Andrews, who shot 91; Dylan Torres, who shot 92; Jace Bentle, who carded a 99; and Joey Adames, who shot 104.
The second team, which was led by Guy Bond with a 98, shot 409 to place third among Division II teams. Frenship No. 2 shot 338 to win the title. Also for Sweet-water, Jonah Lawrence shot 102, Rance Stone 103, Yates Cypert 106 and Michael Hazard 124. Sweetwater plays at Big Springâ€™s tournament Friday and Saturday and at Wylie next Tuesday.
