August 29, 2011

A Highway Patrolman and Sweetwater man were both sent to the Mitchell County Hospital following a Saturday evening crash.

At about 7:58 p.m. Saturday evening, Aug. 27, 2011, Texas Highway Patrolman Ricardo Molina attempted to stop a 1994 Buick for traffic violations which occurred five miles east of Colorado City on IH-20 in Mitchell County.
The driver, Jose Ornelas Jr., 69, of Sweetwater, refused to stop and attempted to flee from the trooper. The suspect left Interstate 20 and drove onto County Road 135. During the pursuit the driver of the fleeing vehicle drove head on into the trooper's vehicle. The driver continued onto private property and disabled his vehicle on a utility pole. The final location was on private property in a dirt field just off of County Road 135, about one and a half miles south of IH-20 at 8:03 p.m.
Once the driver disabled his vehicle, he resisted arrest. The trooper was injured during the head on crash. The driver was injured during the arrest. Both were taken to Mitchell County Hospital.
