Syble Margaret Robertson Hobbs of Maryneal passed from this life on July 23, 2011. Syble was born to Pearl Perry Robertson on June 12, 1919. Her father, Charlie passed from flu and pneumonia in January 1919, five months before Syble was born. Syble and her mother moved to Runnels County shortly after Syble’s birth. They moved to Blackwell in 1928 and farmed. In August 1932, they moved to Maryneal. Syble went to school in Maryneal until the schoolhouse burned down, then to Highland for a short time. She worked several places taking care of children and keeping house. Syble lived in Sweetwater until 1943. She moved back to Maryneal to help her mother with her aging grandmother when her brother, W.E Robertson, was drafted into the Army.
In 1947, she married Wilbur Downing Hobbs. They lived west of Maryneal on the Lance Sears Ranch, where Wilbur was a ranch hand. They moved to Maryneal in 1948. Wilbur began working for the railroad and they moved into the Railroad Bunkhouse. They stayed there almost a year until they purchased a home in downtown Maryneal on the north side of the street.
In April 1949, Wilbur and Syble purchased the Filling Station and grocery store from Mr. and Mrs. Otto May. Syble ran the store and Wilbur fixed flats after he finished his work on the railroad. They continued to work in the store until 1972. In January of 1972, Wilbur passed away. By August, Syble had decided to sell the store. In September of 1972, Syble’s house burned down. Syble rebuilt her home just east of its original location.
Syble cared for her mother and aunt for over 10 years as their health failed. She was a caregiver to those she loved. Syble served as the secretary for the Maryneal Cemetery for many years. She was active in many community activities and was well thought of throughout Nolan County. Syble will always be remembered for the many snakes she hunted, skinned and tanned. She made many purses, belts, hatbands and other things from snake hides.
Syble was preceded in death by both of her parents, Charles (1919) and Pearl (1982) Robertson; her brother, W.E Robertson; her husband, Wilbur Downing Hobbs (1972); and nephew, Rex George (2011).
Wilbur and Syble did not have children of their own, but Wilbur’s nephew and his wife, Rex and Cathy George, were very close to them. Syble always treated them like they were her own children. She loved their kids like grandchildren: Regina and husband Joe Brad McVey, Rexann Kalmer and Robin and husband Todd Pebsworth, as well as the great-grandchildren, Melissa and husband Kevin Gillespie, Marla and husband Kyle McDaniel, Justin McVey, Katie Kalmer, Blake Kalmer, Shadarah Pebsworth and Natalie Pebsworth and great-great-grandchildren, Paige, Kelton, Braxton and Bryler.
Syble was a kind woman and will be missed by her many friends and her family.
Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, July 25, 2011 at Maryneal Cemetery with family members officiating. McCoy Funeral Home of Sweetwater is in charge of arrangements.
