The community of Sweetwater once again stepped to the plate to help those in need. The Nolan County Senior Nutrition Activities Program (SNAP), held the 28th Annual Taste of Sweetwater at the Nolan County Coliseum annex building.
Twenty three local food establishments participated in this year’s event, with all types of food represented. According to SNAP director, Tonya Challis, the crowd numbered at about 350 and helped to raise about $3,568 for the non-profit organization.
SNAP feeds over 200 seniors per day either through home delivery or at its Elm Street location. Challis said that more and more people need SNAP’s services as the economy takes hits and food prices continue to rise. “The money we raised helps offset the difference between what the state pays and what it actually costs to feed them the meals,” she said.
Challis gives credit to all the businesses and people who made this year’s event possible saying, “Everybody was great. The vendors that showed up, all my volunteers, and everyone who came to eat. It took us all to make it happen.”
"Also, a special thank you goes out to Casa Morales for donating the bicycles for the drawing at the Taste of Sweetwater," said Challis.
SNAP is always in need of volunteers and donations. According to Challis, there is a waiting list of seniors who want to join the Meals on Wheels program, but can not be added to the routes until more resources are available. For more information on how to help SNAP, contact Challis at 236-6344.
