It seems as if there is one more thing to check off the "back to school" list — Tax-Free Weekend.
From Friday, August 9 through Sunday, August 11, Texans will take part in the savings to get their kids ready to head back into the classroom. This year marks the 15th year that the Lone Star State has offered savings to residents in their school clothing and supply purchases.
Since 2007, the annual shopping event has been scheduled to fall closer in line with the start of the majority of public schools. Any item priced under $100 is eligible for tax-free savings.
According to the State Comptroller's website, shoppers can use lay-away plans this year to take advantage of the sales tax holiday. Also, ten or fewer backpacks can be purchased tax-free at one time without providing an exemption certificate to the seller.
A backpack is defined as "a pack with straps one wears on the back" on the website. "The exemption includes backpacks with wheels, provided they can also be worn on the back like a traditional backpack, and messenger bags."
The list of some of the clothing and footwear on the state's tax free list include belts with attached buckles, blouses, general-purpose boots, coats, dresses, hooded shirts/sweatshirts, jackets, jeans, pants/trousers, shirts, shoes, socks, shorts and underclothing.
Some of the school supply items that will tax-free include binders, composition notebooks, crayons, erasers, expandable/pocket/plastic/manila folders, glue, highlighters, markers, notebooks, pencils, pens, rulers, scissors and a wide variety of paper — loose leaf ruled notebook paper, manila paper, colored paper, poster board and construction paper.
