A town hall meeting took place on Tuesday, June 26, 2012, in Abilene set up by the Comptroller’s office. Susan Combs, Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts, was the presenter. The meeting was designed to keep the financial issues of the state of Texas in front of the public as Texas prepares to go into the next legislative session. The rainy day fund, set up by the legislature, currently has approximately $6.3 billion in the account. It is projected to reach $7.3 billion by August 31, 2013. This increase is because the Texas economy was not as bad as the rest of the United States and has rebounded quicker.
Medicaid and public education were discussed at the meeting. Additional discussions included the discrepancies in public education funding from the West Texas region to the Metroplex areas. These discrepancies can vary as much as $2,500 to $3,500 per student per year.
