In an effort to motivate Sweetwater High School students to apply themselves and earn high grades, Texas National Bank has established an award they call “Good Grades Pay.” The concept is simple, make the A Honor Roll for a six week period and have your name entered into a drawing to win $50. The pool of names is separated by grade so that one A Honor Roll student from each grade will win $50 for a total give away of $200 every six weeks.
Mike Fernandez at Texas National Bank said, “We want students to understand the importance of doing well in school. Post-secondary education is becoming increasingly important to finding a well-paying job. In 2011, a worker with a bachelor’s degree earned 65% more than a worker with only a high school diploma. That’s a real number, and it is likely to increase as time goes on.”
Making the A Honor Roll is a great accomplishment, but it isn’t a requirement for going onto a Bachelor’s degree. Texas National Bank wants to encourage students to set goals and do well in school. Fernandez added, “Maybe this will get the attention of some students and motivate them to make better grades, but at the very least it will reward those who are already putting forth the effort.”
Sweetwater High School students who made the A Honor Roll during the second six weeks were as follows:
Ninth Grade: Alaina Andrews, Kilanie Ardin, Mickenzie Brownlow, Hardy Escobar, Mikeilah Foust, Isaiah Gonzales, Elizabeth Gray, Hanna Hayes, Michael Hunt, Ashleigh Jimenez, Mark Lawrence, Alexis Martinez, Jazmin Molina, Brick Rico, Ashley Sifford, Alyssa Soles, Keygan Valdez, Sarah Valdez, Keegan Von Atzigen, Ethan Whittenburg.

The winners of the Texas National Bank “Good Grades Pay” Award were Thomas Whittenburg (9th Grade), Caleb Thompson (10th Grade), Teresa Perez-Poe (11th Grade), and Blake Young (12th Grade).
Congratulations to those who made the A Honor Roll last six weeks, and to the “Good Grades Pay” winners. Texas National Bank wants students to remember to apply themselves, set goals, and study hard, because Good Grades Pay!
