Texas Theatre celebrates 75th anniversary

December 10, 2010

Sweetwater’s Texas Theatre will celebrate its 75th anniversary this weekend with the showing of Megamind. Show times are 7:15 p.m. on Friday, 7:15 p.m. and 9:15 p.m. on Saturday and 7:15 p.m. on Sunday. Shown above are Sweetwater Texas Theatre Acquisition & Restoration committee members Weston Pyburn, Tom Henderson, Mick Truitt and Cody Wilkinson preparing for the grand re-opening this weekend.

Seventy-five years ago the Sweetwater Texas Theatre opened its doors for showings of first-run movies and live entertainment. Two years ago people from all around the area started pitching in and working hard to clean, renovate and restore the venue to operable condition. Last week the final connections were made to get the new heating and air conditioning units installed and working in the Texas 2. Today, the smell of popcorn, the charged anticipation as the lights dim and the first flicker of the projector's bright light will signal that Sweetwater's historic theater is once again open for business.
This grand re-opening was made possible by the generosity of individuals and businesses who contributed to bringing this theatre back to life for the community. Plan to visit soon and see what progress has been made, and help keep the Texas Theatre alive for another seventy-five years.
