Three hoop teams stay unbeaten with lopsided road wins
There are still four unbeaten basketball teams in the county after Highland‘s two teams and the Sweetwater boys won on the road Tues-day. Highland’s girls and boys routed Guthrie 53-29 and 57-29, respectively, while the Sweetwater boys won 70-54 at Brownwood.Both the Sweetwater and Highland boys are 4-0 for the year as are Blackwell’s boys, who were idle, while the Highland girls are 9-0 and still No. 1 in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches poll in Class 1A, Division II.Sweetwater’s boys trailed Brownwood 16-14 after the first quarter, but led 32-23 at halftime and 52-36 after three periods. Kaleb Hoo-ver scored 28 points to pace the win while Rhett Torres had 16 and Dylan Bennett 11 for the Mustangs.Meanwhile, the Highland girls got 19 points from Sierra Allen against Guthrie while Kaylee Martin and Madison Moseley had sev-en, Hannah Allen and Beth Richburg six and Schyler Kimbrell four. Albany did win the JV girls game, 24-17.However, the varsity portion of the twinbill was a sweep as the boys won their game easily.The Hornets jumped out to an 18-6 lead after one period, led 28-10 at half-time and 42-20 after three quarters.Brandon Stevens had 14 points, Isaac Rios 12, Kevin Box and Ethan Wilson six, Michael Hyde, Kaden Nach-linger, Jacob Richburg and Seth Wood four and Lara-mie Thompson three. The JV boys also won, 46-27.Sweetwater failed to get a sweep in its twinbill as the girls lost to Brownwood, 60-21. The hosts were ahead 14-5 after one quarter, then in-creased their leads to 34-12 and 42-14 after the next two periods as Sweetwater had its lowest scoring game of the year. No Sweetwater player scored in double figures as Shaneese Brown led the way with eight points.Also seeing action Tues-day were Roscoe’s boys and girls, who played at home but took on separate foes at Roscoe’s gym.Roscoe’s boys (0-4) lost to San Angelo TLC 55-41, in their contest to remain win-less. But the night began on a successful note for Roscoe as the girls romped to a 61-20 win in their game with the Abilene Hawks to go 6-4 for the season.Sunshine Saddler led the girls with 20 points while Eva Aguayo had 10, Shelby Brown nine, Whitney Wil-liams six, Mia Herrera and Samantha Ortega five and Danielle Dean and Ashton Payne three. Javier Leanos paced the Roscoe boys with 16 points while Jesus Leanos had 12, Anthony Ortegon five, Kevin Lavalais four, Dillon Freeman two and Chase Cathey and Cut-ter Davila one.On Thursday, the Roscoe boys return to their gym to host the Blackland-Divide Invitational through Satur-day. Roscoe plays Anson at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. Also in the field are Ira, Klondike, Hawley, Trent, San Angelo TLC and Rotan. Semifinal and consolation games will be Friday with the consolation final, third-place and title games all on Saturday.Highland’s basketball teams are home to face Hamlin on Friday, while the Blackwell girls will be host-ing Garden City in a district matchup. They began dist-rict play Tuesday by hosting Veribest.Meanwhile, the Sweet-water boys are also home to face Bangs on Friday, while the Sweetwater girls do not have a game scheduled.
