ABILENE â€” Tickets for the Big Country Athletic Hall of Fame Banquet to be held May 9 at the Abilene Civic Center are on sale through Friday, April 29.
This yearâ€™s banquet will honor a group of 10 for-mer athletes, coaches, of-ficials and sportswriters who have been selected to the Big Country Athletic Hall of Fame. Among those honored in the 2011 class are ex-Sweetwater High School and Baylor football star Mike Welch, who starred for the Mus-tangs and Bears in the 1980s and early â€˜90s and was named a second-team defensive back on Texas Football Magazineâ€™s 50th anniversary high school football team. He was the only Big Country athlete to be named to the team.
Lady Mustang camp is June 6-9
A Lady Mustang basketball camp that is for students who are completing grades 1-7 will be held at Sweetwater Middle School June 6-9.
The goal of the camp is to improve the skills of players through instruc-tion in individual skills and fun team competitions. Pre-registration for the camp is encouraged.
The Sweetwater Stam-pede, an Arena League football team of fourth and fifth graders, defeated the Abilene Jets 41-6 this past weekend and will now have a second-round playoff game at 9:30 a.m. this Saturday at the Abilene Expo Center against the Abilene Chargers. The winner plays either the Abilene Cowboys or Jim Ned Indians for the championship at 1:30 p.m.
The public is encour-aged to come watch these boys play. The Stampede is 8-0 this season.
