Torres appointed as city secretary/comptroller

August 14, 2013

The City of Sweetwater officially made an appointment for the position of City Secretary/City Comptroller during Tuesday's meeting of the Sweetwater City Commission.
Approval was given for Patty Torres to fill the role, which will be effective this Friday. Following the resignation from Carolyn Lawrence a year ago, Torres has served in an interim role while also continuing her other duties.
At the meeting, Sweetwater City Manager Eddie Brown stated that Torres has proven to be ready to take on this position and offered his full support. After the approval, Torres was sworn into the position by city attorney Pete Sheridan.
In addition, five unsolicited bids from C.D. Trimble Properties, LLC were opened for four lots in Block 20 and one lot in Block 16, all located in the Southside Addition. The lots had been presented in three previous meetings, but were rejected by the commission each time.
A $600 bid was submitted for each lot. It was noted that recently, the Nolan County Central Appraisal District had appraised some adjoining lots at $400, but the respective lots were not at that price.
A motion was made to accept the bids and was approved, although Precinct 1 Commissioner Larry May voted against the measure.
Furthermore, the city commission approved to exercise the option to extend the city's depository contract with First Financial Bank, as well as the extension option for SEED's (Sweetwater Enterprise for Economic Development) depository contract with First Financial Bank--both of which run through September 30, 2015. In other SEED-related business, approval was given for their 2013-2014 budget, which was passed by the SEED board of directors at their July meeting.
Also during the meeting, the two contracts between the city and Georgia-Pacific Gypsum, LLC were approved to be ratified by the city commission. Both contracts were executed by representatives of the company as well as by Sweetwater Mayor Greg Wortham. Additionally approved were the minutes for the meetings held on July 9 and 23.
