The Texas State Technical College Staff Senate organized a non-perishable food and toy drive to benefit the school's food pantry and the Sweetwater Goodfellows. Staff Senate members invited any and all to donate to the cause before donating the items to their respective entities on Thursday, Dec. 8, 2011.
According to Kathy Hickson, Staff Senate President, the organization wanted to give back to its students and to the community during the holiday season. "Some of our students are not able to go home for the holidays and may not have enough money to always go order something to eat in town, so we have a food pantry for our students and figured we would try to fill it for the holidays."
The community project was a toy drive, donating to the Sweetwater Goodfellows who provide food and toys to needy families with children and food to needy individuals during the Christmas season.
The food and toy drive concluded on Thursday in the school's cafeteria where cookies, popcorn and hot chocolate were given to those donating.
Other Staff Senate officers include Monica Wagner, vice president; Kay Kidd, secretary; Sandra Ortega, treasurer; Nick Alvarado, membership coordinator; and Joni Coons, communications officer.
According to Joni Coons, many people donated to both causes, not just Staff Senate members.
