Two locals advance to state track meet

ABILENE — Roscoe’s Caden Smith will be going to the Class 1A state track and field meet in Austin in the discus and shot put for the third consecutive year after winning both events in Region II-A competition Monday.
Smith threw the discus 169 feet, 7 inches — not far off his best of 170-8 — and went 53 feet, 2 inches in the shot put. His dis-cus toss was more than 17 feet ahead of his nearest competitor, Munday’s L.J. Collier. Meanwhile, Callie Sandusky of High-land secured her first-ever trip to the state meet with a second-place finish in the girls high jump (5-4) on Monday. Sandusky’s jump was bested only by Albany’s Kami Norton (5-6). Results for the other local athletes who competed were not available at press time today. Smith also qualified for regionals in the 110 hurdles and Sandusky for the 800 relay. Regional competition ends today for all local athletes.
