Nemir and Linebaugh qualify for state powerlifting meet

Sweetwater’s Sam Nemir and Ryan Linebaugh finished 1-2 in the 165-pound weight class Friday at the boys Region I, Division II powerlifting meet at Sundown High School.
In doing so, they both qualified for the state meet to be held in Abilene on March 26.
Nemir lifted a total of 1,145 pounds with a 440-pound squat, 260-pound bench press and 445-pound dead lift while Linebaugh had a 430-pound squat, 245-pound bench press and 445-pound dead lift.
Both athletes will be making their first state appearance. Nemir, a junior, was a state alternate after a third-place finish at last year’s regional meet in Sundown.
Sweetwater’s other powerlifters who placed were Jay Lomas, fifth in the 123-pound class with a 775 total; Mateo Gonzales, fifth in the 242-pound class with a 1,130 total; Jose Garcia, eighth in the 275-pound class with a 1,155 total; Adrian Lopez, ninth in the 148-pound class with a 950 total; Cory Burns, ninth in the 220-pound class with a 1,080 total; and Hunter Johnson, 10th in the 242-pound class with a 1,020 total. Sweetwater’s other regional qualifiers were Zack Rosas in the 132-pound class, Alex Garcia in the 181-pound class and Kyle Lambert, Spencer Young and Anthony Palacios in the 198-pound class.
