Workshops, other events regarding the City of Sweetwater scheduled for May

The month of May has several events lined up, which were noted by City Manager Eddie Brown during his monthly report at Tuesday's meeting of the Sweetwater City Commission.
On May 4, a celebration marking 105 years of the Sweetwater Fire Department will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the fire station. Grant Madden, the city's Emergency Services Director, extended an invitation to the commissions and the public for the event.
A couple of items are expected to be discussed during the regular city commission meeting in May, such as the "container ordinance". Amendments were requested by the City Commission, in which suggested changes to the ordinance will be presented.
Also, plans are proceeding for the new police station. Brown stated that the hope is for the city to go out for bids during the May 14 meeting.
Two days later on the 16th, a budget workshop on the 2013-2014 budget has been scheduled at the Water Treatment Plant. While the time has yet to be determined, the meeting was set to be held after the May 12 city elections, in which the mayor is opposed in the race.
Another workshop is slated for May 31--although the time and place have not been finalized--so that discussion can be held on various city issues related to the Cline Shale oil development. Matters to be presented include annexation, zoning, development and ordinance issues.
A brief, current update was also given on the SNAP (Senior Nutrition Activities Program) building, as foundation work is being completed at the time of the meeting. And while the item was not listed on his report, Brown gave the commissioners an update on the city's proposal to the Bitter Creek Water Supply Corporation (BCWSC).
A letter from the BCWSC was given to the city, in which they rejected the city's proposal at their April 5 meeting. However, Brown said that the city presented the proposal in mid-January.
The letter also stated that they are willing to work with the city of Sweetwater toward a solution. Brown responded to the commissioners that the city would possibly be willing to negotiate with the BCWSC, although they are unaware of any details at this time.
