V’ballers win their opener

GRAPE CREEK — The Sweetwater High School volleyball team opened its season with a 3-1 road win at Grape Creek on Monday.
After splitting the first two games of the match, Sweetwater — which has just two returning lettermen — took charge by beating Grape Creek 25-17 and 25-9 to claim the win.
Sweetwater got nine kills apiece from Shaneese Brown and Kayla Chowning. Kensi Chowning, Kayla’s younger sister, was next with seven kills for the Lady Mustangs, who host Water Valley and Seminole today at Mustang Gym at 6:15 and 7:30 p.m., respectively. Sub-varsity matches start at 5 p.m. at both high school gyms.
Also Monday, Aly Heredia had 14 assists, 11 digs, 10 aces and two kills; Kayla Chowning had nine digs and one block; Brown had six digs and three aces; Morgan Gomez had 15 digs and two aces; Mikki Reschman had nine digs; Maddie Jones and Lena Lovelady had five digs and Jones also had nine as-sists and one kill; Ziggy Col-lins had three digs, one as-sist, one kill and one block; Maddie Berry had two digs, two kills, one block and one assist; and Mikealah Foust had two blocks and one kill. The JV won 25-12, 25-11, and the freshmen romped to a 25-6, 25-7 victory.
