VA announces Open House of Veteran Healing Center

Mr. Daniel L. Marsh, Director of West Texas VA Health Care System, is pleased to announce the ribbon cutting and Open House of the Veteran Healing Center in Big Spring which will house the Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program. A ribbon will be cut and an unveiling of the signage will occur on Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2011 in front of the newly constructed facility located on the northwest portion of the VA campus. Following a short program, tours will be provided of the beautiful facility. Parking will be available in the employee parking lot adjacent to Ryan Street.
"The community of Big Spring, local leaders, stakeholders, Congressional and Senatorial staff provided overwhelming support to our Health Care System during a review of government resources several years ago. The review, entitled CARES (Capital Asset Realignment for Enhanced Services) was designed to plan where the VA should expand and where it should reduce healthcare services. The results documented a defined need in this area for expanded mental health and residential services to Veterans. This program is a direct result of that study and Big Spring will be proud of this state-of-the-art facility to serve Veterans," said Marsh.
The Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program, also known as the Domiciliary, is the VA’s oldest health care program. The program was established in the 1860’s to provide a home for civil war soldiers. It has evolved from a “Soldiers Home” to a state-of-the-art Clinical Rehabilitation and Treatment Program which emphasizes on personal growth, responsibility and community re-integration.
Veterans, volunteers and community supporters are encouraged to attend this special day for Big Spring. Questions or concerns may be directed to Iva Jo Hanslik, Public Affairs Officer at 432-264-4824 or 1-800-472-1365, ext. 4824.
