Sweetwater's historic Municipal Auditorium will again be filled with the music of classic hits as Al Nelson and Bennie Wheels bring the music of Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash, and many more legends to the local stage at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow night.
“Al Nelson has been a big hit here in his previous concerts that range from Roy Orbison to Beatle Paul McCartney to Elvis,” said Larry Ludlum, president of the Municipal Auditorium board. “Bennie's renditions of Johnny Cash hits will be sure to add an extra dimension to this family-friendly concert.” Nelson was named Outstanding Pop Entertainer at the annual Terry Awards according to Perry Stewart of the Fort Worth Star Telegram. Tickets are $10 and $15 and will be available at the door the night of the concert. Advance tickets can be purchased at the Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce at 810 East Broadway (235-5488). Nelson brings to life the great hits of the 1950s and 1960s and has received rave reviews from Sweetwater and all around Texas: a “true showman” who “becomes Roy Orbison.” Nelson's talents include memorable renditions of several major musical stars of the 1950s and 1960s covering a wide range of unforgettable tunes and personalities. Sweetwater audiences have reacted very well in recent years to the “Thank you very much” tones of Elvis tributes, and now they can add the famous phrase “Hello, I'm Johnny Cash” to their list. Bennie Wheels creates a commanding presence of the legendary “Man in Black” as he enters the stage, and his singing of the memorable Johnny Cash hits promises to send chills down the spine of country and rock fans. “It's hard to explain the connection I feel with my audiences. Performing is just natural to me, where I feel the most comfortable. Portraying Johnny Cash is a mighty big shadow to fill, but I believe it is, without a doubt, my calling,” said Wheels. When “June Carter” joins Johnny on stage — in the person of Bennie's wife Renee — the act is complete, as more classic tunes are sure to follow. “Fans will enjoy an unforgettable evening of family entertainment and nostalgia,” Ludlum said. “We're very pleased to have Al back and to have Bennie and Renee bring us even more memories.” |
