Audience goes wild at auditorium concert

Nostalgia took the stage at the Sweetwater Municipal Auditorium this weekend as special musical guests Al Nelson and Bennie Wheels performed as Roy Orbison and Johnny Cash, respectively. Sweetwater resident and second grade teacher at Southeast Elementary School Crystal Meneses opened up the night’s events with a performance of Gloria Estefan’s “Conga.” Audience members joined in the fun by making a conga line and dancing through the aisles together.
Up next was Al Nelson and his “Rock N Soul Show.”
Nelson has been named Outstanding Pop Entertainer at the annual Terry Awards and has performed several times at the Sweetwater Municipal Auditorium, as Elvis and Paul McCartney among others.
Nelson encouraged audience participation with his performance of several classic hits including, “The Streak,” “Johnny B. Goode,” and many others.
Nelson has been performing for more than 20 years. He has a four octave vocal range.
“I sure am happy to be back here in Sweetwater,” said Nelson during a break in his performance, “You guys know how to make someone feel welcome.”
Nelson would return to the stage later than night as Roy Orbison. He performed several of Orbison’s greatest hits including “Pretty Woman.”
Special guest Bennie Wheels performed that night as Johnny Cash, singing several legendary hits including “A Boy Named Sue.” Wheels’ wife Renee, as June Carter Cash, also performed several duets with her husband to the delight of the crowd.
“It’s hard to explain the connection I feel with my audiences,” said Bennie Wheels, “Portraying Johnny Cash is a mighty big shadow to fill, but I believe it is without a doubt, my calling.”
“We’re very pleased to have Al back here and with Bennie and Renee,” said Auditorium board president Larry Ludlum, “I think we all have some great new memories.”

Every year we would all come together at my grandmother
McFaul-Coplen's home in Roscoe. She is no longer with us, but my family now
celebrates Thankgiving in my home. My parents, brothers, and their families all
bring a dish. I wanted to carry on what my grandmother started, and love and miss
all my family in Sweetwater and Roscoe. - Tracey Flake (Early, Texas)

Last year I had chosen my fall leaf garland with gold candles
however, at the last minute I had to redecorate with my snowman collection due to
the 5-6 inches of snow we accumulated! - Kandy Myers (Sweetwater, TX)

Every year we get together at Mom and Dad's to eat until we
can't breath. Then we proceed to decorate the tree. Everyone has their own ornament.
Once the tree is decorated, we all lay under the tree, turn the overhead light off
and say, "Ooooooooh, Aaaaaaaaah".  - Mel King (Tuscola)

I don't know if y'all remember my parents, James and Sarah
Rycroft, or not -- but years ago Daddy would secure the National Guard Armory in
Sweetwater for Thanksgiving and would invite anyone in Sweetwater that didn't have
family to be with to join us for dinner.  We would cook all week long.  We also
delivered Thanksgiving dinner to people that were "home bound".Daddy would
set up 3 or 4 televisions for the ball games.  Folks would sit around
and play domino.  It always turned into quite a social event.  Daddy couldn't stand the
thought that anyone would be left alone on Thanksgiving.  Mother and Daddy have
been gone for some time now, but I'll bet there are folks that will remember this
. - Sherron Foster (Paradise, TX)
