The show goes on at Texas Theater
Written by Thomas Watson

The Texas Theater, a historic landmark in the town of Sweetwater, may be re-opening it's doors soon. A group of community leaders have begun a project aimed at buying and refurbishing the theater. "We want people to be part of the Texas 100," said Sweetwater Mayor Greg Wortham, "We are looking for 100 individuals, families, businesses, civic clubs and others to contribute $500 each toward the purchase of the Texas Theater."
The Texas Theater will celebrate it's 75th anniversary in 2010. Wortham and other members of the Texas 100 want to see the theater reopen in time for that celebration.
The plan calls for the Chamber of Commerce to establish a trust for local investors to contribute toward the purchase of the downtown landmark. The chamber board would then rebuild the front of the building, restoring the marquee. During the reclamation project, the Chamber would seek a private operator for the facility.
"Everybody is excited in participating in the buying and refurbishing of the Texas Theater," said incoming Chamber of Commerce president Mike Sheehan. "The theater has always been such a big part of Sweetwater. Reopening it is critical to our image."
Since the closing more than a year ago, many Sweetwater residents have been forced to drive out-of-town to enjoy the latest films, a fact understood by Sheehan.
"Sadly it's true. If you want to see a new movie, you're driving out of town. Once you figure in the cost of gas for the drive, you're actually spending quite a bit of money. If we can reopen the Texas Theater, the people won't have to drive anymore; they can stay and have a good time here at home."
If purchased and reopened, the theater would serve as a family entertainment complex for current films, film festivals, live music venues, and a conference center.
Tax deductible contributions can be made to Sweetwater Improvement, Inc., a well-established 501c3 institution administered by the Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce. Contributions can be delivered to the Chamber of Commerce office at 810 E. Broadway or mailed to Sweetwater Improvement, Inc., PO Box 1148, Sweetwater TX, 79556.
If you wish to have your donation picked up, please contact Mayor Wortham or a member of the Mayor's Youth Task Force at 236-9499.
"This project will only enhance the quality of life in our town," added Wortham. "Who doesn't want to see the theater re-open? I think everyone in town probably has at least one really great memory of this place. We want to make it special again so that everyone will continue to make new memories."
