The Mustang Bowl is to Sweetwater what the Eiffel Tower is to Paris — a defining landmark. Each football season, thousands of visitors flock to the bowl to watch West Texas football in all its helmet colliding glory. Most would agree that sitting through a game at Mustang Bowl is a one-of-a-kind experience as far as high school football is concerned.
With that in mind, the Sweetwater ISD board of trustees have conceived a plan that will make the historic venue even more attractive. About $775,000 in improvements are slated to begin as early as January of 2009. Sweetwater ISD superintendent Terry Pittman met with architects from CADCO Monday afternoon, and the two parties discussed the renovations that will be taking place. The most notable of changes to the stadium will be the implementation of a main gate with giant mustang horses adorning each side. There will be separate entrances installed for home and visitor crowds, as well as a gathering area immediately inside the building. The plaza should alleviate crowd congestion which happens with the current layout. 60 new bathrooms will be built, as well as a modern concession stand with a closed-circuit feed displaying live action from the field. A wrought iron fence complimented by stone pillars will replace the existing one. According to Pittman, the fans of the 2009-10 Sweetwater Mustangs can expect to see the bowl's facelift, as construction should be completed by early summer. "The final plans will be coming Wednesday or next Monday," Pittman said. "We're hoping to have the bidding underway by Christmas. The plans are set, we just need to do a little fine tuning." |
