Sweetwater native to speak at 2009 MLK banquet

Tickets are now on sale for the 2009 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. banquet. The national holiday celebration will be conducted from 6-8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 19, at the Nolan County Coliseum Annex. The scheduled agenda consist of keynote speaker, Dr. Aubrey Todd along with song and dance performances, a brief skit, an essay, recitals and an awards presentation to regional community leaders.
Dr. Aubrey Todd was born and raised in West Texas - Roby to be exact - to Aubrey and the late Evelyn Todd, both longtime educators in the Sweetwater Independent School District. Dr. Todd graduated from Sweetwater High School in 1977, where he was student body president and a member of the National Honor Society. He also excelled in extracurricular activities, being named to the All-District and All-Area basketball teams, along with being selected to the All Region Choir. Todd and his family were members of the Mt. Rose Baptist Church, under the direction of Rev. F.K. Williams.
Dr. Todd received his Bachelor of Science degree from Angelo State University in 1981. While attending ASU, he played basketball for two years and sang in the Angelo State Chorale. He was a founding member and president of the ASU Gospel Choir, Generation of Faith. During his stay at ASU, Dr. Todd became the director of intramural athletics and was selected as a presidential scholar for his excellence in academic performance.
Dr. Todd received his Masters of Education degree from Texas A&M Commerce and his Doctorate of Education Administration from Baylor University in Waco. During his studies at Baylor, he traveled internationally to Amsterdam, Brussels, Paris and London, studying International Comparative Education. His dissertation was entitled, “The Demographic Professional and Educational Characteristics of Charter School Administrators in Texas.”
Dr. Todd has been an educator for 26 years, teaching for 10 years in districts across the state, including Big Spring, Dallas and Houston. He has served as an administrator for 16 years, serving as principal at Wilmer-Hutchins High School, John Tyler High School, DeSoto High School and currently Madison High School in the Houston Independent School District. Dr. Todd has distinguished himself professionally as a recipient of a fellowship through the National Endowment for the humanities, studying ethnic and immigration history at Columbia University in New York City.
Other professional experiences include being adjunct professor at Dallas Baptist University and Concordia University in Austin. He has been published as a contributing writer for the book “Ethics in School Leadership,” and he has been a presenter for the Southwestern College Board Regional Conference in Dallas where he discussed the under representation of minority students in Advanced Placement Programs. He has served as a member of the legislative committee for the Texas Association of Secondary School principals, National Alliance of Black School Educators and Association and Supervision of Curriculum Development.
Dr. Todd is the father of five children, Ontoria, Aubrey, Jr., Trenton, Sirevlon and Titus. Dr. Todd currently resides in Houston where he is the principal of James Madison High School. He is a member of Good Hope Baptist Church.
Coordinators of the third annual Dr. MLK, Jr. banquet are anticipating a more exciting event and a complete success for the 2009 event.
