One man dead in Breckenridge police shooting
Written by Staff Reports
Tuesday, 02 December 2008
The Texas Rangers are investigating a police officer-involved shooting in Breckenridge on Saturday that left an Albany man dead. Breckenridge police received a call about a vehicle accident in the 500 block of North Court Street. The vehicle, driven by Michael Richardson, 37, apparently had run through an intersection and into a fence, according to a news release issued by the Department of Public Safety.
Police said they believed Richardson may have been trying to flee the scene, but the vehicle was caught on the fence and he was spinning his tires as he tried to rock the vehicle free, the release said.
Officers said they repeatedly tried to get Richardson's attention but he apparently did not acknowledge their presence and did not turn the vehicle's engine off.
Richardson then allegedly grabbed a weapon from the front seat of his vehicle and "started to point it in the direction of the officers," the release said. An officer then shot Richardson.
Richardson later died and his body was taken to the Tarrant County medical examiner's office for an autopsy. Police said they believe alcohol may have been a contributing factor in the incident.
Breckenridge police declined to identify the officer who shot Richardson and would not say if he had been placed on leave. All inquiries were referred to the Rangers.
KTXS-TV reported that Richardson apparently had been dropping off a friend after going out drinking at a Breckenridge bar.
Richardson had children, the station reported.
