Local Latin music band, Proximo Sonido recently had the honor of being nominated for the 29th annual Tejano Music Awards. The band, with members from Snyder, Loraine and Sweetwater, will be on the ballot for the Best Crossover Song of the Year category.
The band describes their music as progressive Tejano with a bit of a conjunto sound. “Proximo Sonido is everything the band's name suggests and much more. Dramatic vocals and bold lyrics make the band's brawny, yet intimate sound a radio staple for the years to come.” The band has been together for two years with their first gig being on May 5, 2007, in Big Spring. Band members are young but seasoned guys who have been playing with West Texas-area bands since they were in their teens. When they formed they began performing frequently across West Texas, specializing in cumbias and rancheras. The band consists of Elias Barrera of Loraine, lead vocals and accordion; Sammy Alvarez, Jr. of Sweetwater, bass guitar; Jesse Limones, Jr. of Loraine, drums; Jose Luis Garcia or Snyder, bajo sexton; and Fabian Limones of Loraine, secondary vocals and congas. All members of the band, excluding Garcia, are cousins. Nominations to the Tejano Music Awards originate from artists and record labels. The Texas Talent Musician's Association (TTMA) reviews and submits a nomination list to the nominating and screening committee for verification and eligibility. The top 12 nominees are placed, by qualifying category, on the general ballot and published on the TTMA web site (www.tejanomusicawards.com) for qualifying voters. It is then up to the public to vote for their favorite artists to determine the winners. Those who wish to vote may visit www.tejanomusicawards.com/ballotform1.html to receive a ballot form via e-mail. The ballot will be emailed during the official voting period, which will end May 31. Voting will take place online and there will be no paper ballots. Only one ballot may be entered per household and only one ballot may be entered per representative for each band. Members of the band say that they grew up around music, which inspired them to become musicians. “My dad was a musician and I was inspired by him to pursue music,” said Barrera. Alvarez added that their fathers played together when they were growing up. Barrera is also a songwriter, writing his first song at the age of 14. He says that he derives his inspiration from everything in life from love to other personal experiences. Proximo Sonido has recently released their first album, “Por Primera Vez,” which is available at Hasting's book store in Sweetwater, along with other Proximo Sonido gear. The album consists of 10 songs, eight of which are originals from singer-songwriter Barrera. They are currently working on their second album at CSP Records in Sweetwater, owned and operated by local artist Tommy Ortega. Por Primera Vez is made up of six cumbias, three rancheras and one easy listening tune. The nominated song “Liar,” can be found on the CD. “Drawn from elements in life, every single track on the CD is distinctive. The album has real depth emotionally and musically and ranges from soulful to upbeat, but each and every track is performed and sung from the heart,” said band members. The band was recently selected to perform at the San Antonio Fan Fair and will make their next appearance at the Cinco de Mayo Festival beginning at 9 p.m. Saturday, May 2, 2009, in Brady. The band is available for events such as weddings and quinceaneras, as well as other events. “The future looks very promising for Proximo Sonido and like all great bands, as long as fans continue to believe in the energy and excitement of Proximo Sonido, their music will continue to live on. We want to urge people to go online and request a ballot to vote for us,” said Alvarez. The 29th Annual Tejano Music Awards will take place Friday, July 17, 2009, at La Villita Assembly Hall in San Antonio. For more information on Proximo Sonido, visit www.myspace.com/proximosonidoband. Their music can be requested on KJTZ 106.9 radio of Abilene. |
