SFD welcomes new firefighter
Written by Tatiana Rodriguez

The Sweetwater Fire Department recently hired a new member to its staff, Robert Ascencio, originally of Abilene. Ascencio is a 1998 graduate of Abilene Christian High School and attended Abilene Christian University and Southwest Texas State University before graduating from the regional fire academy at Texas State Technical College in Abilene.
Becoming a firefighter had been on Ascencio's mind just out of high school. "I've wanted to become a firefighter for a while now. I like helping people. I thought about it just out of high school," he said. "At the time, I wasn't old enough to be a firefighter. I was only 18 and at the time, you had to be 21."
Ascencio wanted to stay in the Big Country, so he applied for a firefighter job in Sweetwater. "I told people at the fire academy that I wanted to stay around the Big Country, and I had a friend from the fire academy, Jeremy Wolfe, who said he enjoyed working at the Sweetwater Fire Department."
Ascencio is no stranger to smaller towns. "My father's family is from Merkel, so I feel right at home in Sweetwater and I like it here. Everyone I've met so far has been really friendly."
Ascencio and longtime  girlfriend, Sarah Ophein, plan to move to Sweetwater in a month or so.
As for his job so far, Ascencio says, "I have alot to learn in general such as upkeep on the trucks and ambulances, but I am really enjoying the job. Everyone is really nice and helpful. They were all great in showing me around. I will definitely be here for a while," he said.
Ascencio is the son of Guadalupe Ascencio of Abilene and Will Ascencio of Merkel.
