Two Sweetwater youth, both racing in soap box derby cars sponsored by the Sweetwater Jaycees/Jaycee Rooster organizations, were the recent winners of the 13th annual Texas Midwest Soap Box Derby. Matthew Butler, 14, in the Super Stock Division and Aaron Philips, 9, in Stock Division, will be representing Sweetwater at the 72nd World Championship All-American Soap Box Derby in Akron, Ohio on Saturday, July 25.
The boys will be traveling to Akron, along with their families, to spend a week at Derby Downs, beginning with the opening ceremony on Monday, July 20, trial runs and family activities throughout the week, and ending with the championship finals on Saturday. Donations are being accepted to help offset the travel expenses for these families, and the cost of shipping the cars to Akron. An account has been set up at the First Financial Bank in Sweetwater, in the name "soap box derby," to receive donations. Donations will also be accepted payable to the Kiwanis Club of Sweetwater and mailed or received at JavaJax Coffee Bar, 325 Oak Street, Sweetwater. Other winners in the local event were as follows: Stock Division second place Colt Bewley, third place Marc Butler, fourth place Luke Butler, all of Sweetwater, and fifth place Tylar Hale of Big Spring. Super stock Division second place Ryan Hutchings, third place Christian Taylor, both of Lamesa, fourth place Gannon Gager of San Antonio, and fifth place Nathan Taylor of Lamesa. Winner of the Sportsmanship Award, voted on by the participants, was Colt Bewley, of Sweetwater. Best decorated car in stock division went to Ashel Pyburn for his Transformer Car, and the best decorated super stock car was Polnack Racing Team's dolphin car, driven by Christy Mitchell of Big Spring. |
