Roscoe will host a line-up of bands Saturday, July 4, for their Independence Day celebration, leading up to a fireworks show at around 9:30 p.m.
The first band on stage across from City Hall on Cypress Street will be a group of Roscoe natives reunited under the name from their high school days, Purple Spirit. Former recording artist, Les Huff, leads the group on vocals and lead guitar. Gordon Miles, Ronald Dorman and Kenny Zimmerman will also return to Roscoe to join him, bringing all four original members back together after 35 years since their last performance. The group was popular in the early 1970s when the four boys were Roscoe High School students. They played after many home football games, sometimes performing from the top of the concession stand. They also played many area banquets and school functions during that time. The group will play songs from the 1970s. They will begin playing in Roscoe Saturday at 1:30 p.m. The Chase Scott Band, of Sweetwater, will play at 3. This band, which covers classic rock songs from the 1960s, 70s, 80s and 90s, as well as current music and original material, is made up of Shelby Scott, Chase Scott, “Mrs. B,” Mickey Scott, Mickey O’Briant and Kenneth Terry. According to the band’s MySpace page, they have talented musicians that play the guitar, keyboard and even the cello. At 5 the Moody Crawford Band, based out of Abilene, will take their turn to play. This band has played alongside artists such as Kenny Chesney, Neil McCoy, Miranda Lambert, Kevin Fowler, Ray Price and Don Williams. They also recently released their latest single to radio, “Lucky Me.” They have played for Chelsea’s Pubs all over the U.S. and have worked for the Department of Defense, playing for the military in places like Korea and Guam. The band plays mostly Texas country music but also covers country and classic rock. Finally, the Hogg Maulies will take the stage at 7. This Lubbock band recently released its latest live album from Lubbock’s Blue Light. Their bass player, Parker Morrow, is a Sweetwater native. The group plays Texas Country and has performed many times alongside Texas country act Cooder Graw. The fireworks will begin around 9:30, and will be shot off from north of the railroad tracks, directly north of town. City Administrator Cody Thompson said they could be viewed from downtown Roscoe where the bands will be playing. Also that day, a parade will kick off the July 4th celebration at 10 a.m. Those who wish to participate in the parade are asked to begin lining up at 9:30 at Broadway and Cedar Streets. Parade organizer Robert R. McBride said anyone interested in being in the parade is welcome. The parade route will be along Broadway, starting at Cedar, and ending up at the baseball park where there will be a baseball tournament that morning. Also during the day will be a variety of booths with wares for sale. There will also be food booths, and the Roscoe FFA will serve barbecue and homemade ice cream at the community center from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. In addition, the Roscoe Seniors of 2010 will host Bingo at the old grocery store downtown, and the Roscoe Historical Museum will be open throughout the day. The kids can also enjoy a bounce house and rock climbing free of charge, and the City Pool will be open with free admission from 1-5 p.m. |
