The Texas State Legislature recently passed House Bill 3613, which allows for the total exemption of the residence homestead of 100% disabled veterans. The bill comes as a result of a constitutional amendment approved by voters in November 2008 and will become effective for the 2009 tax year.
The Nolan County Appraisal District has identified about 150 disabled veterans in the county. On June 30, these veterans were mailed a letter along with a request to complete the required new application form, if eligible, for the total exemption. All disabled veterans are asked to submit a current copy of their rating letter from the Veterans Administration. Local 100% disabled veterans are encouraged to complete and return the application as soon as possible in order for the chief appraiser to certify values on July 25. Any disabled veteran needing assistance, is asked to contact the Nolan County Appraisal District at 235-8421. The form is available from the Nolan County Appraisal District, 208 Elm Street, Sweetwater, Texas or online at the State Comptroller's website, www.window.state.tx.us/taxinfoproptax/. |
